Statement as of 4:23 PM CDT on August 01, 2014

... In most cases July proved to be quite pleasant...

It was just 2 years ago that Kansas had been torched by one of the
ten hottest julys on record. That definitely wasn't the case this
year.

In Wichita... the average July temperature was an even 77 degrees
which made 2014 the 12th coolest July on record and the coolest
since 1967 when the July average was 76.2 degrees.

In Chanute... the average July temperature was 74.8 degrees... making
2014 their 2nd coolest on record. The record is 72.9 degrees set in
1950.

In Salina... July was certainly cool but not to the 'degree' that
Chanute and Wichita were. Their average of 79.1 degrees is their
18th coolest on record.

In Russell... the average July temperature was 76.2 degrees... which
was the 6th coolest on record... and their coolest since 1994.
Russell's coolest July on record is 73.6 degrees back in 1950.

The following is a summary of the temperature records that were set
or tied in july:

Record lows:
             previous record
July 15th:
russell: 51 56 in 1973
wichita: 55 55 in 1990 (tied)

July 16th:
chanute: 51 57 in 1967

July 19th:
wichita: 57 61 in 2009

Coolest highs:

July 17th:
wichita: 67 75 in 1911
russell: 68 73 in 1967
salina: 70 75 in 1967
chanute: 73 75 in 1911

July 18th:
russell: 72 75 in 1967

July 30th:
wichita: 72 73 in 1903
chanute: 72 72 in 1971 (tied)

In the water department... the most significant rainfall occurred on
the 1st and the 10th.

On the 1st... a few thunderstorms with very heavy rains doused parts
of Reno... Harvey and Sedgwick counties with 2 to 3 inches of rain. A
Flash Flood Warning was issued for central Sedgwick County.

On the 10th... slow-moving thunderstorms with torrential rains
drenched parts of central and south-central Kansas with 2 to 4
inches very early that morning. Rainfalls between 3 and 4 inches in
Barton County (great Bend measured between 11 PM and 4 am) prompted
a Flash Flood Warning to be issued at 347 am that would be in effect
until 845 am.

Fortunately July was predominantly cool for rainfall was scarce. In
fact the 0.73 inch total made 2014 salina's 9th driest July on
record.

Meteorological Summer... which runs from June 1st to August 31st...
is two thirds in the books and for most intents and purposes... its
been a quiet Summer. We're about to see how August pans out.
